Night Sky Body, the new project by longtime Hooker Vision favorite Frank Baugh, follows up a string of increasingly interesting releases (on Nailbat Tapes, Sound As Language, and his own Kim Dawn) with what is sure to be regarded as one of his best recordings to date.
Even for those who've followed Baugh's decade-plus run of exploratory genre scrambling (mostly working as Sparkling Wide Pressure), "Entire Seasons" will reveal new surprises with each new listening. The piano and finger snaps that start the album might be something of a red herring. Soon enough a Godzilla scream erupts from a guitar, and the drum machine locks into a brain-hammering pulse. Finally, little waves of noise scrape and pluck the air while a bass slowly drops out of tune. And that's just the first track, 'Viu'. 'Closed Circuit TV' follows with a crawling, syrupy post-punk drum and keyboard. Frank's dream journal vocals cut through the haze: "We might be at some kind of summer camp". There's the Sabbath-esque riff towards the end of 'Chaotic Pool', smothered in feedback. 'Claw the Walls', similar to 'Closed Circuit TV', slithers along like slurred purple industrial. The piano and alien sounds ballad that begins 'Skuttle and Grasp' fades around 2 minutes before the song drifts into familiar Sparkling Wide Pressure-style guitar and cassette interplay. 'Soft Concept' is somehow equal parts pastoral and industrial. Shimmering guitars give way to a controlled burn of harsh noise, left smoldering. The slow-core daydream of 'A Past' evokes the half-remembered days of teenage autumn. Gray afternoons spent wandering around in the woods or driving slowly through puddles, locked into the back-and-forth of the windshield wipers. After lulling us briefly into a false sense of safety, 'Haunt Values' closes with a burst of strangled noise rock.
While retaining the psychedelic/nostalgic dream logic as his former project, Night Sky Body ventures into darker territory. This is Baugh's shadow work. Whether jittering anxiously or drifting on slow-motion vocals, "Entire Seasons" sounds like a mixtape made inside a dream.
